Modern building design is a multifaceted approach, and as a result, it’s vitally important to ensure you’re getting the most from your designs. As part of this, choosing the optimal materials is essential, and our experts here at Yuanda Glass - as one of the leading providers of top-quality curtain wall glass in the region - can help. In line with this, today, we’re looking at some of the most common types of curtain wall systems in modern building design to help you decide which solution might work best for your needs.

What are the Different Curtain Wall Systems in Modern Building Design?

Modern building design is a highly complex process, and it’s not always clear which system will best suit the needs of your own project. However, if you’ve been looking to incorporate curtain wall systems into your own projects, the following types are crucial to understand. Knowing the core differences between these could help you pick out the perfect solution for your own manufacturing efforts, too.

Stick System

As perhaps the most traditional type of curtain wall system, stick wall systems require assembling of the frame on site, piece by piece; however, the components and panels will typically be made and cut to size off-site. They consist of individual horizontal transoms and vertical mullions (which is where the name “stick” comes from), and glass panels are included between these to provide a stunning solution.

Unitized System

Whereas the stick system requires your new glass wall to be constructed on-site, unitized systems go one step further. With this system, the curtain wall panels are pre-fabricated off-site and shipped to the construction site for installation, which makes the system is faster and more efficient than stick-built; however, this can come with much higher costs, and it’s especially useful in areas where labor costs are high or otherwise hard to find.

Semi-Unitized System

Sometimes, a “best of both worlds” solution is needed. As such, the Semi-Unitized system offers a blend of features from both stick and unitized systems, with some panels pre-fabricated off-site and others assembled on site.

Bolt-Fixed System

Another valuable option to consider is a bolt-fixed system. As with unitized systems, these designs arrive with pre-drilled holes that allow the panels to be quickly and readily attached to the structure of the building. Due to the increased pressure, bolt-fixed systems will usually be thicker.
