Curved Glass

Curved glass allows designers to make a statement with new construction or retrofits that stand out from the square edges and flat surfaces that make up most facades.

What is Curved Glass?

If you’ve been trying to determine which type of glass is right for your property, curved glass is one of the more obscure options you’ll need to consider. Indeed, many people overlook the importance of curved glass. However, in reality, this can be an exceptionally versatile material.

Generally speaking, curved glass is a specialist type of glass pane that has been carefully shaped during manufacturing to give it a unique and smooth curvature. Comparatively, regular glass generally tends to be made in a single, flat panel.

Most often, curved glass often features in architectural applications, although regular properties don’t usually feature curved windows. Instead, these are often integrated with more highly customized windows and designs, such as on curved walls or to create a statement window. It’s also worth noting that curved glass can sometimes integrate nicely with skylights and even with equipment.

How is Curved Glass Made?

When it comes to manufacturing, curved glass can’t be made with a regular manufacturing process since care needs to be taken to add a distinct curve to the panel. Once the glass panel has been made, it is cut to size before being heated in a specially-designed furnace. Here, temperatures can reach as high as 700°C, softening it and making the panel more pliable.

Once the glass has been heated, it is much easier to work with, allowing it to be molded and shaped. Generally speaking, a mold or pressing machine is used to gently place pressure on the panel slowly changing its shape (with care being taken to avoid damaging the glass). Finally, once the glass has been molded, it can then be cooled quickly, helping restore its previous strength.

One of the key features of the molding process is that it still allows for additional steps to be taken. As such, this should be possible if the panel needs to be altered, tempered, or the like. Laminating is another example of post-manufacturing works that can be applied to the pane. Usually, this will depend on the required strength.

Heat-treated bending

To bend the glass during heat treatment in a furnace, which either fully tempers or heat-strengthens the glass simultaneously. The process is similar to the tempering or heat-strengthening process, the only difference being a flexible area in the tempering furnace.
