What is Ultra Clear Glass?

Ultra-clear glass offers far greater transparency than regular panes, making it even clearer than before. This is something that many people don’t even realize is available, but it can no doubt offer a myriad of benefits for a building’s final aesthetic and look.

What Makes Ultra Clear Glass So Clear?

The key feature of ultra-clear glass that helps make it so amazingly clear is its low-iron content. While the majority of commercially available glass only has very trace amounts of iron (around 0.1%), ultra-clear glass takes this to a new extreme, cutting iron contamination down as low as 0.01%. With this thought in mind, the iron’s discoloration level is reduced by a great degree in ultra-clear glass. This potentially offers a much greater end result for properties.

It’s not just the ability to reduce tint and discoloration that matters here, though. Indeed, in addition to making the color much more transparent (rather than tinted with green), the low-iron content allows more light to pass through the glass. In turn, this means that the glass pane, when kept clean, will usually have a much clearer and more transparent appearance.

What is the Difference Between Clear and Ultra-Clear Glass?

Both clear and ultra-clear glass focus on giving a great level of transparency and clarity – but the latter tends to be far more effective overall, thanks to the unique properties. Indeed, ultra-clear glass includes substantially less iron than regular clear glass – potentially as low as 0.01% - which helps reduce the amount of green tint associated with the glass. It’s also worth noting that this increases the level of transparency and allows more light through, potentially brightening a room overall.

In terms of direct appearance, there’s a very slight difference in looks between clear and ultra-clear glass usually. The latter tends to have a slight blue finish, whereas clear glass may be slightly greener in color. However, for whichever option you choose, most high-quality glass panels should be finished to a standard where this is not obviously noticeable, especially in passing.

What is the Difference Between Ultra Clear and Low Iron Glass?

They’re actually the same product! Indeed, in regular glass, it’s usually the iron content of the glass (around 0.1%) that can cause slightly less transparency and a green tint to the panel.

By contrast, ultra-clear glass has more iron extracted during the manufacturing process, meaning that it only contains a fraction of a percentage of the iron. This substantially influences the final look of the panel, stopping it from tinting the light coming into a property.

As a result of this, ultra clear (low iron) panels are widely used in applications requiring exceptionally high-quality results, although this isn’t always easy to achieve. Therefore, you may want to consider whether this could be a worthwhile investment for your needs. And, if you do decide to invest in low-iron, ultra-clear glass, make sure you’ve partnered with an industry-leading professional to help make your decision a little easier and ensure you’ve purchased high-quality panels.
