What is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass is a particular type of safety glass. Unlike other glass panels, which are often designed with aesthetics in mind, laminated designs consist of two or more layers of glass, bonded together by a plastic interlayer material. Most often, this inner material will be polyvinyl butyral (PVB), but other alternatives may also be possible.

This interlayer provides much greater strength and flexibility to the glass, making it highly resistant to shattering when struck with high force. It often varies in thickness, depending on the desired properties of the laminated glass. For example, thicker interlayers can provide increased strength and impact resistance; however, for applications needing a more eye-catching finish, interlayers with different colors or textures can add aesthetic appeal to the glass.

Applications of Laminated Glass

laminated glass is often used for applications requiring a strong and durable type of glass that’s resistant to splintering; this is thanks to its unique properties and ability to resist fracturing.

However, it’s also worth noting that it also offers effective noise reduction, meaning that laminated glass can often be easily integrated with applications needing a reliable solution for noise control. As such, whether it’s a private room or somewhere that needs additional noise control, this could be a good option to consider.

Some other common applications for laminated glass can include in building scenarios, especially for commercial properties and exterior windows; for vehicle windshields, which often get chipped and scratched by stray stones and pebbles; in decorative glass works, and even in glass railings.

As such, the potential opportunities for laminated glass panels are numerous, so it’s no surprise that the laminated glass market is growing over time. Thus, if you have been looking for a material that could work for your unique requirements, make sure you consider the properties that laminated glass can offer to help.

Why is Laminted Glass Environmentally Friendly?

When choosing a material for your next project, an important aspect to consider is whether the material is environmentally friendly (or not). Fortunately, this is something that’s actually offered by laminated glass, since it can provide several key benefits.

Energy Efficiency
One of the key features that help make laminated glass so popular for eco-friendly reasons is the ability to help with energy efficiency in a property. Indeed, these panels can improve the energy efficiency of buildings by reducing the level of heat transfer between the interior and exterior. In other words, businesses and homeowners have to spend less on energy bills – thereby reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling. In turn, this significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, making the property greener (and more affordable) overall.

Recyclability
Another key feature that makes laminated panels so eco-friendly is their recyclable nature. Indeed, these panels can be reused in a variety of applications after they are done. In such scenarios, the glass is typically separated from the interlayer material and then processed for reuse – although it may be possible to recycle the inner plastic depending on the material used.

Durability
Strength is an important factor to consider when choosing a glass panel, and laminated glass doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Indeed, these panels are often much more durable than regular glass, which reduces the need for replacement and disposal. This can help reduce waste and the environmental impact of glass production while offering a much more cost-effective and practical solution.

Safety
While it doesn’t tie directly into the environment, another key feature of laminated glass is its excellent safety. This reduces the chance of the panels breaking completely, which in turn can mean that the panel needs replacing less often. What’s not to love? Indeed, this is undoubtedly a great feature, both for the environment around us and for business owners’ and homeowners’ pockets too!

What Happens When Laminated Glass Breaks?

While laminated glass is more resistant to breaking than regular panes, it will still get damaged when pressure is applied. However, in such cases, the interlayer material (usually a type of plastic) helps hold the two glass panels in place. This, in turn, helps prevent the panes from falling apart, in turn stopping the glass from splintering into small pieces with sharp edges.

How does this work? Well, one of the key features of the interlayer plastic is that it offers a very high degree of bonding strength and elasticity; this helps keep the panels together much more strongly, even after an impact. At such points, the interlayer material absorbs a great deal of the impact’s energy and force, distributing it more evenly across the surface of the glass. Thus, this helps give the glass greater strength and safety.
