When it comes to choosing a specialist type of glass for your next project – be it a building project or a new piece of equipment – knowing about the different types of glass on offer is crucial. However, this is something that many of us struggle with since laminated and tempered glass can offer many benefits and drawbacks. As such, today, we’re looking quickly at some of the key similarities and differences between laminated and tempered glass to help inform your decision; after all, knowing which of these could be right for your application may not always be straightforward.

Similarities Between Laminated and Tempered Glass

Before we begin looking at the differences between laminated and tempered glass, knowing the core similarities can definitely help. And, of course, it’s worth noting that both of these designs are very similar, offering much stronger solutions compared to regular glass. Indeed, both materials are made with strength and durability in mind (although these achieve in very different ways).

In any case, the biggest similarity still comes in the nature of these two panels. Indeed, both laminated and tempered glass designs are made with strength in mind, focusing on increasing the durability of the panels and their ability to withstand high levels of pressure from external forces. As such, both laminated and tempered glass should be able to cope with greater force and pressure than regular glass, making them great for security applications.

Differences Between Laminated and Tempered Glass

While laminated and tempered glass are both very similar, it’s worth noting that they do have several key differences. Keeping these in mind could help you find the optimal material for your own needs.

Of course, the biggest difference is the manufacturing process (in other words, how they’re made). In summary, laminated glass is made by bonding two or more layers of glass with an interlayer material, which is most commonly made from a form of plastic with high bonding strength. In contrast, the process of making tempered glass instead relies on heating regular glass panes up to a high temperature and then cooling them quickly, thereby adding to their strength.

Another difference is seen in terms of how the panels withstand greater forces. In order to explain it briefly, laminated glass is usually designed to hold its shape when struck by a lot of force, thanks to the strong bonds between the interlayer material and the glass panes. This helps reduce the risk of injury from sharp, jagged edges. In contrast, though, tempered glass does still tend to shatter when it breaks; however, this will likely take a lot more force, and it tends to form much smaller pieces.

Final Thoughts

If you have been looking at the key similarities and differences between laminated and tempered glass, knowing where to begin can really help. Indeed, while many assume that laminated and tempered glass can offer great solutions, they are actually very different materials.
